Free paper shredding events near Chicago run through October 2026, and most of them will let in more people than you'd expect. Below are the confirmed dates left this season — north suburbs, west suburbs, Oak Park and Lake County — along with who each one will actually admit, how much paper you can bring, and what gets turned away at the curb.
These events give you secure document destruction and paper recycling in one stop. The catch is that nearly every one is restricted to residents of a particular town or waste agency, and the limits range from two bags to six boxes. Check who's eligible before you load the car.

North and northwest suburbs
The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) runs about twenty document destruction events a year, April through October. Seven are left in 2026:

That covers Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, South Barrington, Wheeling, Wilmette and Winnetka.
Bring ID — it gets checked at the car window. The limit is six file-size boxes or paper grocery bags per vehicle, and business, school and institutional documents are not accepted. Events are weather-dependent and can close early once the trucks fill up, so confirm at swancc.org or 847-724-9205 before you drive out.
West suburbs

The Kane County event is worth the drive if you're outside these towns — it's the only one on this page with no residency requirement at all.
One caution about that county calendar: most of what's on it is electronics and textile collection that accepts no paper whatsoever. The five above are the ones that specifically list document shredding.
Oak Park
Saturday, September 19, 9 a.m. to noon — Paper Shredding and Foam Recycling Event, Public Works Center, 201 South Boulevard.
This is a Village of Oak Park service for Oak Park residents rather than a regional event. Each household is limited to two bags or small boxes of documents carrying personal information. Ordinary paper — newspaper, magazines, chipboard, junk mail — is turned away, because it already belongs in your recycling cart. Lake County

What to Bring to a Document Shredding Event
If a document has your name, address, account numbers, or Social Security number on it, shred it. Here's a quick breakdown:

That isn't an oversight. These events are funded by residential waste programs and staffed to match — a few volunteers, one truck, a three-hour window. Commercial destruction carries obligations they aren't set up to meet. If you handle client files, employee records, or anything covered by HIPAA, FACTA or GLBA, you need documented chain of custody and a certificate of destruction, and a community shred day gives you neither.
