How to Recycle Shipping Pallets in Chicago: Where Warehouses, Retailers & Property Managers Can Dispose of Wood Pallets

Wood pallets pile up fast in warehouses, retail backrooms, and loading docks — and they're 100% recyclable
If you manage a warehouse, retail operation, distribution center, or commercial property in Chicago, you know the problem: pallets accumulate faster than you can move them. The good news? Wood pallets are one of the most recyclable materials in commercial waste streams. They can be repaired, reused, or ground into mulch and engineered wood products. The key is knowing where to send them and how to handle volume efficiently.
♻️ What Happens to Recycled Pallets
Wood pallets follow several recovery paths depending on condition:
Repairable pallets are inspected, fixed, and resold for reuse in shipping and warehousing
Non-repairable pallets are ground into mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel
Clean wood can be processed into engineered wood products like particleboard or MDF
Treated or painted pallets require specialized handling to avoid contamination
Chicago-area pallet recyclers process millions of pounds annually. The material stays in the supply chain far longer than single-use packaging.
Where Chicago Businesses Can Recycle Wood Pallets
GreenWay Recycling — processes pallets on site at our Chicago facility, with scheduled commercial pickup or drop-off. Repairable stock is sorted for reuse; the rest is ground for mulch, bedding, and biomass. Mixed loads (pallets plus cardboard, shrink wrap, and other commercial recyclables) go out on the same pickup. Most facilities require advance notice for pallet-only loads. If you're mixing pallets with other wood waste (crates, dunnage, skids), C&D recyclers are often the simpler route.
📦 How to Prepare Pallets for Recycling
Separate by condition:
Stack repairable pallets separately — recyclers pay more for intact stock
Keep broken pallets in a separate pile — these go to grinding
Remove pallets with heavy contamination (oil, chemicals, food waste) — these may require special handling
Remove non-wood materials:
Pull off metal banding, plastic wrap, and cardboard before drop-off
Leave nails and staples in place — recyclers have equipment to handle fasteners
If pallets are marked with paint or stamps, that's usually fine unless the facility specifies otherwise
Know your pallet type:
Heat-treated pallets (HT stamp) are accepted everywhere — no chemical treatment
Methyl bromide-treated pallets (MB stamp) require specialized disposal — call ahead
Painted or stained pallets may not qualify for mulch/bedding use — ask the facility
If you're unsure about treatment markings, check the IPPC stamp on the pallet stringer. HT means heat-treated and recyclable. MB means fumigated and restricted.
Why One-Off Pallet Drop-Offs Don't Make Sense
Pallet recycling economics depend on volume. Facilities that process pallets are set up for truckloads, not individual units. If you're a business generating pallets regularly — even a few dozen per month — you need a commercial pickup arrangement, not a trip to a drop-off site.
Signs you need scheduled commercial service:
You're generating more than 20 pallets per month
Pallets are taking up dock space or blocking access
You're paying staff time to haul pallets in personal vehicles
You're mixing pallets with trash because disposal is easier than recycling
Commercial pallet recyclers offer regular pickup, often at no cost if your pallets are in reusable condition. Even damaged pallets can be picked up as part of a scheduled route.
What About Selling Used Pallets?
If your pallets are in good shape, you may be able to sell them instead of paying for removal.
Pallets with resale value:
Standard 48" x 40" GMA pallets in repairable condition
Specialty sizes (48" x 48", 42" x 42") in high demand
Hardwood pallets (oak, maple) worth more than softwood (pine, spruce)
Pallets with no resale value:
Broken stringers, cracked deckboards, or missing blocks
Heavy staining, chemical contamination, or mold
Non-standard sizes that don't fit automated handling equipment
Call the recycler before assuming you'll get paid. Market rates fluctuate, and what's worth money one month may be free removal the next.
