The Resource Center is a non-profit recycler — Chicago’s first. Its one remaining drop-off is the Rail Yard Recycling Center at 1325 East 70th Street, which is by appointment only and closed Sundays. The long-running North Park Village Recycling Station at 5801 N. Pulaski Rd. closed in February 2024.

Materials have to be sorted before you arrive, into the eight categories they accept: cardboard and food packaging; newspaper, office and glossy paper; glass sorted by colour; plastics #1, #2 and #5 only (not #3, #4, #6 or #7); hard and soft food aluminum; steel cans; and scrap metal, including wires and cables.

The CHaRM Center is a free drop-off for Cook County residents, and it does take several things a blue cart can’t: electronics of almost every kind (laptops, desktops, monitors, hard drives, cables and accessories, TVs, game consoles, small kitchen appliances), clean #6 polystyrene foam, and clothing, shoes and household textiles. Cook County runs it in partnership with South Suburban College, on the college’s South Holland campus — the drop-off is in the overflow parking lot on the north side of campus; enter at the traffic signal on State Street.
