What is Waste Diversion?
Waste diversion measures how much of your waste is being diverted away from the landfill. Instead of going to a landfill, materials are recycled, composted, or repurposed, returning valuable resources to manufacturing and reducing environmental impact.
GreenWay helps Chicago businesses develop custom waste diversion programs that reduce costs, meet sustainability targets, and provide documentation for LEED certification and corporate reporting.
Request a free waste audit and we'll identify opportunities to increase your diversion rate.
How to Calculate Waste Diversion
Understanding Your Diversion Rate
Your waste diversion rate shows what percentage of your total waste is being recycled or repurposed instead of going to the landfill.
The Formula
(Diverted Waste ÷ Total Waste) × 100 = Diversion Rate %
Example:
Total waste generated: 10,000 lbs
Waste sent to landfill: 3,000 lbs
Waste diverted (recycled): 7,000 lbs
Diversion rate: (7,000 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 70%
